Excellent city with lovely warm people. The attractions are well planned within budget. The variety of food options is astonishing and available throughout, accommodating all pocket types. The Botanic Gardens are must visit especially for families. The tram ride is another must do activity as it covers historic and culturally important places with the tram rider giving excellent insights. Methven is a good place to stay if you are planning a few...
Methven is a good place to stay if you are planning a few days skiing in the winter, be prepared for closed days. I would go for self catering as the standard of service and quality of food is much the same as what you could do at home. If you are prepared to pay top dollar there may be somewhere that is high standard, I never found it. On closed days you can walk the Fairy Trial by the racecourse, go to the hot pools try not to eat there unless you are prepared to wait 40 minutes to an hour for your food, beverages may not be up to standard. There are also other tracks in the bush not far from Methven that you can do a 30 to 3 hour walk. Pleasant and friendly country city with easy access and roads. Quality shopping and food outlets. Close to rivers, lake and mountains and handy on why to Dunedin. Springfield is only an hour from Christchurch yet so close...
Springfield is only an hour from Christchurch yet so close to great scenery for drives and many sporting activities including Mt Hutt Ski Fields plus others. Arthur's Pass is a fabulous drive, Rakaia Gorge is beautiful, the drive to Coleridge Power Station, at the back of Mt Hutt is very scenic. The town of Methven is not far away. On our way back home to Queenstown, my husband was so tired so we decided to do a last minute booking, was only one room left and we were lucky to get it. The property manager was so kind and very helpful, room was great all we needed a great bed and easy location to drive out. We chose Darfield because we were doing some research nearby. Darfield is perfectly located to find agricultural supplies and outdoor clothing which we needed. Darfield, just 35km from Christchurch, links all routes also to.the south and west and north. Very relaxing area with many outdoor activities to do.
Very relaxing area with many outdoor activities to do. Great for families to walk around Castle Hill around the rock formations or fishing along the rivers and plenty of different walks around the amazing areas. There were mountain biking trails up Porters with the team at Porter's lodge able to drive you back up to the top of the trails.
