FAQs about hotels on Ameland
The Midpoint of the Wadden Islands
With landscapes ranging from beaches to woods and salt marshes, Ameland packs a lot into its small area. Centrally located among the Dutch Wadden islands, it is also centrally positioned in what it offers: plenty of natural beauty and moderate nightlife.
Its North Sea coast has Blue-Flag beaches that culminate in the De Hôn and Oer sand dunes, one of which is over 24 metres tall. Hundreds of bird species live here and over the island, and seals can be seen on nearby sandbanks.
In addition to nature holidays, Ameland is popular for sport fishing. There are over 100 km of cycle paths, and you can go horseriding on the beach. Horses also launch the island’s lifeboat once a month.
Booking.com offers accommodation including apartments, guest houses and hotels in Ameland. Most are in Nes, arrival point for ferries from neighbouring Terschelling and Schiermonnikoog, and Holwerd on the mainland. It has a working flour mill and a bell tower designed by the architect of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.
To its east is the small village of Buren, while east a statue of dike watchers with lanterns is found between Nes and Ballum, home to Ameland Airport. At the island’s western point is Hollum, site of a golf course, the island’s lighthouse and historic houses of former whaling boat commanders.

Nes is a cosy, historical village, not cheap, but not very expensive either. It is the harbor village located almost in the middle of Ameland and therefore perfect for day trips to either direction. The restaurants are good quality, so is the ice-cream, the vegetables and everything else you can buy. There is a great supermarket called Jumbo on the main road from the ferry. If you want to go for hikes, nature with lots of birds, deer and wild rabbits are just a short walk away. The Amelanders love their horses, and they are everywhere.Guest review byMargrethe - 10.0
Lovely place.
Lovely place. Plenty of great restaurants and the people are so friendly. Great history to the place also which we were impressed with for a small island. Visited the lighthouse and walked to the top, visited the life saving museum, WWII bunk house and the grave of the 8 horses that lost their lives. Great walks. Also some lovely shops if that is your thing!!Guest review byGailNetherlands - 8.0
Buren is a small village, but Ameland is also a small island...
Buren is a small village, but Ameland is also a small island, so you cannot expect large towns here. Very nice nature, as in all Ameland. Large dunes, where you can bike or take a walk... Beautiful beaches with lots of sand... Beach restaurant (we did not visit it due to covid19)... Ameland is small, so we biked through all the island during our 4 days stay: one day to one side, another day to another side. Good restaurants to order meal. We reccomend to try fish restaurant Str. Anders and Italiand meal restaurant De Branding. Meal was delicisious.Guest review byEgleNetherlands - 10.0

The town itself is so charming and pretty, with all of its very old and beautifully maintained houses and other buildings. Shopping facilities are splendid. There is nothing lacking on the island. The fish 'n shop is a treat in itself, both in terms of its architecture and its meals. :)Guest review byDonnaNetherlands - 10.0

It is just so charming and different from what we saw before. Life seems to be slow, calm and easy here. Streets are quiet, small garden, entirely clean. Pleaces to have a coffee and sit whole afternoon enjoying life. Travel by bus and take it easy, great and nice bus drivers driving everywhere. Missed bistro/street food, but perhapsit would not fit here.Guest review byVernerováCzech Republic - 10.0
Nes is a beautiful little town in the centre of Ameland.
Nes is a beautiful little town in the centre of Ameland. Great for people coming by ferry for the day or great to stay nearby. Lots of restaurants/cafes and shops. It is also walking distance from the beach. So you can walk from the ferry, stop for lunch or coffee in Nes; and then carry onto the beach. Or centre your holiday around Nes. We did and loved it. Our favourite place, other than the beach, was the nature park on the beach side of Nes. We had a dog staying with us, so he loved walking through the park.Guest review byReneeAustralia - 10.0
This was the second time we’ve come and have loved it.
This was the second time we’ve come and have loved it. As soon as you reach the island you immediately relax. Both times we’ve had bad weather but the strong winds have helped blow the clouds and rain over quickly. Gollum is cute town with plenty of places to eat and drink. The shops are also great to explore. There is a coop is you stay self catered. The first time we hired bikes to get around and the second time we brought our own. Bikes help you explore more. The paths are well signposted and you can reach secluded beaches. The first time we discovered Ameland Adventures. We’ve hired surf boards and even tried the land sailing which was one of the best hours ever. Every time we’ve eaten at the Sunset Beach Bar. The view is incredible. Although slightly pricey, we’ve never been disappointed. We’ve promised to come back every year!Guest review byHelenNetherlands
