A nice little town with lots of nice flower decorations in parks and squares. The river walk is very nice. Nice places for food and drinks, both at the Demians Hotel and elsewhere (The Hot Cafe, Casino Olympic, Stender’s Pizza, Cafe Velve). I came to like the Tase coffee shop were it was fine to sit both outside and inside. The staff at the tourist office was helpful and very service minded.Guest review byBirgerNorway - 10.0
Saldus was first mentioned in 1253
Saldus was first mentioned in 1253 From 1562 to 1795, the Saldus region was part of the Duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale. The original name "Salden" was replaced by the German "Frauenburg" for almost four centuries. The name of Frauenburg is more associated with the former castle of the Order, which was located on the left bank of the stream flowing into Ciecere. Like the whole of Kurzeme, the Saldus region became part of the Russian Empire in 1795. Administratively, the Saldus region was part of the Kurzeme governorate during the tsar's time. After the independence of Latvia, there was a boom in the economic and cultural life of Saldus.Guest review byvijaUnited Kingdom
