- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 249 reviewsI’ll be recommending the town of Ito and Yokikan to anyone who visits Japan. It is the small and charming town you want to visit to experience true Japanese hospitality, omotenashi. This is a 5th generation, family-owned ryokan and it showed with such amazing service. Some highlights are when you arrive, the owner (who speaks excellent english, which is quite rare at ryokans) will offer you a map and many recommendations for restaurants, activities, and even local conbinis. We took those recommendations and this was easily our most memorable part of the trip. Then the lovely and nice staff will show you around to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the baths or amenities. I felt very charmed and safe with this staff, it just warms your heart. There are clear hours and instructions to ensure that both genders get to experience all 3 baths. Definitely take the time to try all three, they each have a different relaxing environment! Something that took me back was that the staff cleaned the wheels of my luggage and I had genuinely never seen that before. My partner is allergic to seafood and they were the only ryokan who could make an accommodation, which we’re thankful for and could eat a delicious breakfast in our room, at ease. On top of all that, the owner was generous and gave us a car ride back to the Ito eki when we checked out. The baths were clean and just the right soothing temperature, the ofuton gave us some of the best sleep we had on this trip, and the open-air bath at the top is as memorable as it gets. We truly relaxed for two whole nights and cherish our stay at Yokikan. We can’t wait to come back!Guest review byMaximUnited States
- From US$463.99 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.5Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 86 reviewsStaying in ryukan is a must of my trip to Japan and Arai Ryukan doesn't make me disappointed. Starting from the location of the ryukan which is very easy to reach. You get off to check in and the staff will bring your car to the parking. Checking in is my first impression. The staff is willing to answer your questions and will show you all facilities available. You will have your own personal caregiver. The dinner and breakfast are included in the price and they are very excellent. The onsen both indoor and outdoor are the unforgettable experience. The town attractions are located within the walking distance..Guest review bykaninThailand

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.2Very good - What previous guests thought, 149 reviewsWe had a very spacious room with a beautiful ocean view. We especially enjoyed the complimentary beverage service. The staff was very helpful. Food was very good, but did not offer much in variety if staying multiple days. It's a little out of the way, but there is shuttle service available to Toba Station if you wish to venture off and do some sightseeing. Just be sure to leave and return between the shuttle service hours.Guest review byCarole AnnUnited States
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 6.9Pleasant - What previous guests thought, 136 reviewsI was surprised by the quality of the services and low cost. The rooms are pretty big. They have buffet-style dinner and breakfast which is perfect for vegans/vegetarians, you can chose the stuff that you can eat and stuff was very helpful to explain to me the contents of the food. Hot spring bath is huge. The location is close to the station, main shopping street, beautiful river and close to the beach.Guest review byKseniiaJapan

Nagoya is a treasure for eating and shopping.
Nagoya is a treasure for eating and shopping. LOTS of great restaurants. There's the science museum, the Toyota museum, and Nagoya Castle. No "authentic" neighborhoods to explore, though there is an ethnic shopping street near Kamimaezu Station. There are lots of traditional Japanese coffee shops "kissaten" to relax in if that's your thing. If you venture away from downtown there are places like Shirotori Gardens or Arimatsu on the historical Tokaido Road which was a center of indigo dyeing. No restaurants though in the 800 m length of the neighborhood.Guest review byBalibari2015United States - 10.0
Takayama is a jewell in the mountains.
Takayama is a jewell in the mountains. Small, walkable, ( around the city or in the mountains ), has great food, friendly people… There are plenty of day trips from Takayama. We could not go to the valley to try onsen ( heavy rains ) and went to the Green hotel instead - the onsen there was, surprisingly, beautiful and relaxing. The train journey from Takayama to Kyoto is spectacular ( sit on the left side ) - amazing views of the mountains and the river.Guest review byMariaSpain - 10.0
Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. We speak very limited Japanese, but were welcomed and managed in small local restaurants and Izakayas.Guest review byMarkAustralia - 8.0
Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us.
Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us. Easy to get to from Osaka. Stayed in a traditional ryokan (tattoo friendly). Spent the day walking along the harbour to the ropeway up to Atami castle which had several different art displays and museums including an adults only one and a great view of the coast. Away from the beach things were pretty steep so a car might have been a sensible optionGuest review byBrigidAustralia - 8.0
Hamamatsu is a small industrial city located about halfway...
Hamamatsu is a small industrial city located about halfway between Kyoto and Tokyo. It has a number of industrial tourism sites - Suzuki Plaza, esp., and music-related sites - Yamaha Innovation Road and the Musical Instrument Museum. There are a number of Jazz- and Classical-music festivals in the fall, and that is a good time to visit. Lake Hamana is beautiful, and there are a number of interesting temples, shrines, and historical sites like the small but beautiful Hamamatsu Castle. Mostly ignored by Western tourists, but easy to get around, it's charm is in one's ability to visit Japan as it is for those who live there.Guest review byJerome - 10.0
Everything about Gotemba is excellent and magical.
Everything about Gotemba is excellent and magical. Gotemba is one of the most significant epicenters for adventure and sightseeing in all of Japan. It is of course an exceptional gateway to hiking and adventuring on Mount Fuji using the Gotemba, Subashiri and Fujinomiya 5th Station traiheads. Hakone-Yumoto onsens/spas and Lake Ashi are also right in the area. Free shuttle buses offer a 20 minute ride straight to the Famous Gotemba Outlets if shopping for 15 hours is what you are in the mood for. Don't forget Odawara Castle just down the way or Fuji-Q and the Fuji Speedway just up the way, to name a few. Gotemba ROCKS! Mount Fuji and the Osunabashiri descending trail are really the #1 world class attraction among many. Furthermore, all the special local people who support all the vast Gotemba opportunities are the best and truly loved.Guest review byBrettUnited States - 8.0
I travelled from Tokyo to Shin-Fuji via Kodama Shinkansen.
I travelled from Tokyo to Shin-Fuji via Kodama Shinkansen. The fare is ¥5900 one way and travel time is nearly an hour. I stayed at Toyoko Inn which is 150 meters from the Shin Fuji station. There are lots of car rentals in the area but I was not able to get one as they only accept advance booking from their website. It took me 2 hours getting to and from the foot of Mt. Fuji, by bus and a 15 minute walk in the village to reach my destinations. Roads are quite narrow but they are common in Japan. Like most countryside places in Japan, Fuji is relatively clean, rich in nature, and lots of places to explore. My advice if you want to visit Fuji: 1. Travel by Shinkansen going to and from Fuji. 2. Rent a car so you can visit most of the attractions in and around Mt. Fuji. 3. Spend at leat 3-4 days in the area. 4. Bring cash with you always as most establishments are cash based. 5. Download Papago app on your phone so you can translate Japanese images, signs, etc if you're having difficulty understanding the language. That's it and enjoy your trip to Mt. Fuji.Guest review byMauro Jr - 10.0
RELAXING QUIET GIFU!
RELAXING QUIET GIFU! We just wanted to visit other places in Japan. We have been to Japan a few times already. We like going to these kind of relaxing places. We went hiking, we walked everywhere since everything was walkable. We had so much local food and sake of course! ONSEN! Nature everywhere! We also met some of my aunt's family and friends. It felt like a home. We love everything in here. We could have stayed longer but will be back and will see the other sights. Thank you GIFU! :)Guest review byisi paniniPhilippines - 10.0

Definitely visit the zoo if you have the opportunity. It’s very interactive with lots of cute animals. The in Granpal Park illumination was also really good! 7/11 and Family Mart have amazing egg sandwiches. The kadowaki tsuribashi suspension bridge and trails are worth the visit as well.Guest review byHeatherUnited States - 10.0
One of Japan's six ancient kiln towns.
One of Japan's six ancient kiln towns. If you are into ceramics it's a brilliant place to visit. If you're not, it's a lovely, relaxed town with nice walks and good places to eat. Very close to Nagoya airport. There is a free shuttle bus into Tokoname or use the station. Home of the lucky waving cat - Maneki Neko!Guest review byCerysUnited Kingdom
