- From US$423.06 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 2,605 reviewsLocation is 10-15 minute walk from the Takayama station, which is convenient when you are doing day trips to the nearby attractions. I stayed with my 74 and 78 year old parents, and the walk was doable. The hotel has a free shuttle from the station which we used when we arrived and when we left due to the bags, other than that, we walked to the station. The city center however, is a bit of a walk (25-30 mins) which was not doable with my parents, so we had to pay for taxis, which are expensive in Takayama, so just keep that in mind. If i had been there with other ppl my age, i would have not mind the walk.. Food: Their restaurants were closed by 8:30, and so do most restaurants in Takayama, so make sure you (1) reserve wherever you want to go because most rests go off of reservations and (2) eat before 8pm or you will go to bed with an empty stomach. Breakast was pricy but if you are looking for something more than bread and coffee at the bus station before your tours, wake up early and might be worth the price. Facilities: Very well maintained, very clean, staff was very helpful. Onsen was AWSOME, super clean, multiple "jacuzzies", 2 indoor, 2 outdoors, SUPER relaxing. They are free of use between 3pm and 10pm and have everything you need such as hair treatments, hair dryers, etc. They have a sauna, multiple showers, and overall, it felt luxurious and comfortable. We had a massage which I believe was relatively cheap ($30 USD) for one hour and it was a very therapeutic one, although it is not on a closed room spa, which was okay for the price. Rooms: They are spacious, futon beds are comfortable, they are warm so you don't have to worry about heating it up when you return from your day trips. The staff will set up your futon bets at 7pm, unless you ask them to be earlier.Guest review byValeria329United States
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 537 reviewsThe hotel is very well located and has a very efficient shuttle service from the Kawazu station: we were able to use it to drop our luggages in our room and go back to explore the Kawazu cherry blossom festival! The room is beautiful sea view. Public bath are very pleasant. All the hotel is adapted to children (welcome kits, high chairs, playing area, even the public baths are well equiped for them!). The staff is really nice and helpful. Thank you for this nice stay :)Guest review byMorganeFrance
- From US$209.04 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very good - What previous guests thought, 313 reviewsThe food was excellent with very impressive presentations. We had half-board and the latest breakfast serving was at 8:30, the latest dinner at 18:30. Not much happening in the evening, although the onsens were great. It felt like a spa-resort more than a bustling hotel, but we enjoyed it. We had a traditional room with futons and a lovely sea-view. It was simple but comfortable and clean.Guest review bySella AarrestadNorway
- From US$156.10 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 105 reviewsIt’s clean, very well equipped with heater, cooking utensils. The owners are so nice and friendly. Language may be a barrier but they tried really hard to accommodate all our needs. The place is slightly secluded which is perfect for quiet vacation but you can still go to town centre by just taking 1 train to Karuizawa station and the owners are nice enough to drop and pick you!Guest review byShereenMalaysia
- From US$348.17 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 3,671 reviewsThe stay was great, with helpful staff, cozy units and a quiet region. The views of Fuji were awesome, either from our big room (fits 8) or from the balcony at the front desk. It's a quick stroll to the lake, which makes for a great jogging experience with Fuji-san as a background.Guest review byGuilhermeBrazil

Both meals were delicious, and we had them in a private room. Also, there were a few private baths. The service staff were amiable and helpful. It is worth a trip to this remote area of the Noto Peninsula.Guest review byManamiJapan

Such a beautiful city. Surrounding burbs Awesome!
Such a beautiful city. Surrounding burbs Awesome! Put like this. Prada, Gucci, Lois Vitton, Armani, the list long. Why go to hectic Tokyo when Nagoya offers all the rich city life without the intensity of Tokyo. I was highly impressed. I have travelled a great deal. I liked this city better than New York, Chicago, Atlanta, LA. So beautiful, easy to navigate, wonderful to walk around. Surrounding burbs so beautiful! One last thought, all the US cities listed are dirty, trash laden, crime filled destinations. New York smells like a sewer, scaffolding that NEVER ENDS, piles of trash at night, a nighmare. I don't see this in Japan.Guest review bykoushirouJapan - 10.0

Really liked downshifting from Tokyo and spending 2 nights in Kanazawa--a third might have even been right. The gardens, architecture, restaurants. Would definitely recommend to anyone who asked where to stop during a Japan vacation.Guest review bySNDUnited States - 10.0

Takayama is beautiful, geared towards local and foreign tourists. The only catch is that some places will only take catch so you need to keep that in mind. We found beautiful crafts close to the temple, we also visited the local morning markets and caught the bus to Shirakawa-Go which I cannot reccomend enough.Guest review byHelenaMalta - 10.0

I've been extremely lucky, I was in Niigata after a snowstorm and I found an amazing scenery of beaches under a white carpet. The fisherman market is an experience you should not miss, delicious food and crazy cheap bill. Try to drive the coastline!Guest review byMastershifuChina - 10.0
Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. We speak very limited Japanese, but were welcomed and managed in small local restaurants and Izakayas.Guest review byMarkAustralia - 10.0

I went to Nagano to do historical research at three separate facilities about an hours drive from central Nagano City. -- My main objective was visiting the Underground Imperial Headquarters 松代大本営地下壕 (松代象山地下壕) at Matsushiro. The tunnel system is impressive, and the museum next to it adds a lot of background. -- I visited the Hijiri Aviation Museum 聖博物館 in Omi, which displays items and posters full of info about its past as a stop for those on the way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, as well as having a few combat aircraft and a main gun from the Japanese Battleship Mutsu. In an out-of-the-way place. -- I also went to the Mugonkan 戦没画学生慰霊美術館 無言館 in Ueda City. A very somber place since it introduces Japanese artists (showing a couple of their paintings) who died during the war years. Also in a rather remote location. It's unfortunate that all three have signs and displays that are almost exclusively in Japanese. Non-Japanese speakers who are interested in World War II history and happen to be near Nagano may still get something out of a self-tour of the tunnel system in Matsushiro, which is interesting to see in person (and cool in summer). The Wikipedia entry for it seems accurate, much more than you can find on site in English. Be aware that cameras are allowed at Hijiri, but cannot be used in the Mugonkan and in the Matsushiro museum (the tunnels are okay). I don't recommend taking kids to any of these sites.Guest review byTheodoreJapan - 10.0

People there are very helpful and courteous. It is very clean, and uncongested. Quiet and peaceful, unlike the other cities. I highkt recommend pairing Toyama and Tetayama, i.e. 3 and 2 nights respectively . Simply amazing.Guest review byWangSingapore - 8.0
Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us.
Quiet seaside town with no tourists apart from us. Easy to get to from Osaka. Stayed in a traditional ryokan (tattoo friendly). Spent the day walking along the harbour to the ropeway up to Atami castle which had several different art displays and museums including an adults only one and a great view of the coast. Away from the beach things were pretty steep so a car might have been a sensible optionGuest review byBrigidAustralia
