FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

- From £175.50 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 5,539 reviewsThe breakfast and choice was absolutely amazing. The best we have had at a hotel. It was all fresh and constantly topped up. We had not planned to eat evening meals in the hotel, but the food was so good we ate there every night. The room too was fantastic, with plenty of space. Marc the concierge was very knowledgeable about the area and recommended some great walks suitable for us and the buses to get to them. The receptionists were also very welcoming showing us around the hotel and our room on arrival. The location of the hotel is good too, just a few minutes walk from the center and therefore not too noisy. A few days after we left I realised that I had left an expensive item of clothing behind. The hotel kindly arranged to post this home for me. We usually holiday in the Med but with the high temperatures we now get there during summer, decided to try the UK this year. We had such an enjoyable time will definitely be back next summer.Guest review byRogerGuernsey
- From £247.50 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 511 reviewsOur lake view room was large, and very comfortable. Fabulous scenery, just sit and enjoy the entire vista. A big bathroom with both bath and shower, and a magnified mirror....(I love that for putting on the makeup!) The breakfast was absolutely delicious, 100% to the breakfast chef and staff, all the staff were friendly and courteous and welcoming. We had dinner in the restaurant, again it was really lovely, and the waiter was very helpful in recommending a wine to compliment our main course. Will definitely stay here on our next visit to the beautiful Lake District.Guest review byRoseIreland

A lovely place to visit.
A lovely place to visit. Lots of good local shops, cafes and restaurants that were nearby. Buses 599 open top available to get to other places and train station with good connections if you don't want to drive. We enjoyed visiting Ambleside, Bowness, Coniston and Grasmere. We took a boat out on Windermere from Low Woods, the car ferry to Hawkeshead and the boat trip on Lake Coniston. A walk down to the lake directly from Windermere via Birthwaite Road leads you to two small jetties where people were swimming, paddle boarding and people watching. In Windermere, Home Ground Cafe is a great place for breakfast but be prepared to queue. Tillys bar did a good fish and chips. Cafe Italia for pizza etc.Guest review byJulieUnited Kingdom - 6.0

Kendal is a beautiful and historic market town with lots of excellent shops, pubs and restaurants. It's got a great library for rainy days and there's lots of fascinating old alleyways and buildings to enjoy. We loved eating at the Brewery Arts Centre in the evening and also the brilliant Comida Spanish tapas cafe just down from the arts centre. Kendal is a great place to use as a base to explore the Lakes.Guest review byJonUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Grasmere is one of the prettiest villages in The Lake District and is an idyllic place if you are lucky with the weather. There are interesting tourist attractions nearby as well as excellent mountain walking options. The resort benefits from a very good bus service, which gives additional options in nearby places so you can get out and about without using a car. Travel to Grasmere by train and bus is perfectly feasible so you do not need a car.Guest review byJulianUnited Kingdom - 10.0
