Coliseum

The gore! The glory! This iconic arena specialised in sticky ends. Built in the 1st century, it could hold up to 80,000 spectators, who would come along to witness gladiatorial combat and bloody re-enactments of naval battles. As you look up at the stands, it doesn’t take a huge leap of the imagination to hear the deafening roar of the crowds, or to picture the spectacular savagery on show.

In my opinion it is highly overrated.

In my opinion it is highly overrated. On the outside it looks impressive, but once you're in - it's just a ruin. There are other Roman arenas that still function - operas, theatre, concert halls (like Verona or Pula) - this one is just a walkthrough. Sad, really.

It's a beautiful place and if you have access to multiple places, I would recommend booking at least half a day, because it's not exactly small. If you only have access to the arena, then 30 minutes is enough. Entry is at a specific time (there's no point in getting there earlier) - they really strictly let you in at a specific time. Toilets are available inside (unless you have bought a ticket for just the arena).

This was a bit of a disappointment.

This was a bit of a disappointment. We bought a guided tour but it was so crowded that we had to wait in line for a long time before even entering the site. And when we got in, there were so many people it was tough to hear our guide. Still, if we didn't have a guide, I'm sure it would have been much worse.

The Coliseum was fascinating, but when you leave, watch out for pickpockets and thieves. They operate extensively in this area. We saw two couples who were victims of unsuccessful attacks of these persons. There is no policing around this area, which makes you wonder why, as it is well known for its pick pockets and opportunistic theives.

Really great location, amazing restaurants and not far from centre of Rome and attractions like the Vatican and coliseum. It was really clean and felt spacious. We didn’t find it difficult to sleep at night despite it being located near restaurants. The staff were incredibly hospitable and we would book again.

The hotel is 100m away from the Pantheon, around 1,5km of the Coliseum and 2km to the Vaticano, so you can do everything by foot. The principal street (Via Del Corso) with the most populares stores is about 5 min walking. We enjoyed the location a lot. The room was big and confortable.

The apartment was average, the bathroom was terrible in every way, even the bathroom glass fell on my relative and his body was injured. The only good thing was that it was close to the Coliseum. There were five chairs in the picture, but there were only three. The dishes were not clean, in a word, unbearable.

Great hosts- particularly Maria. She was very warm, attentive and informative. Richard (maintenance) was also very professional and helpful. Excellent location within walking distance of most popular attractions. Largo di Torre Argentina is literally across the road and the Coliseum is approximately a 25 minute walk, or 8 mins by electric scooter. Good transport links. There is a supermarket (which closes late) a stones throw away and many restaurants are minutes from the apartment.

the location is just up the road from coliseum and Manzoni metro station is underneath the hotel, so getting around was very easy. The hotel is exceptionally clean and inviting, the room rather minimal but nice and clean, the only thing i disliked a bit was having to get out of the room to go to the bathroom, i knew this before i booked, it was my first experience and i don't think i would do it again. but overall my stay was very pleasant, i slept like a baby, communication was very easy and smooth

Everyone knows the Colosseum is the prime landmark in Rome, but also check out Castel Sant'Angelo - it's a medieval fortress built on top of Hadrian's tomb, and you can see everything from the ancient foundation up to the lavishly decorated papal apartments on the top floor. And the city views from the battlements are amazing!

It's amazing to walk inside the colosseum and imagine how things were few thousand years ago. In the book store of the colosseum you can take a look at some graphic illustration(it's kinda cartoon like) overlaying on the photo of the ruins. It really brings history alive when you're looking at those old stones alongside with those graphic illustration. (We actually bought that book because it's pretty cool!)

Because it's not a big city and there is so much to see when wandering between the 'big-ticket' sites like the Colosseum and the Parthenon. Walking allows you to come across the tiny pizzerias and cafes which you'd never see if you were on a tour bus or in a car.

I suggest visiting the city outside of the summer months. My family went during Christmas and though there were crowds, they were small. I can only imagine the lines and congestion in the summer. Also, if you really want to go to the Colosseum, get your combined ticket at the Palatino first! We paid 24 Euro total for my family (children free) to gain access to the Palatino, Roman Forum, and Colosseum. Worth it when I saw the crazy line into the Colosseum and we just walked past it all.

We went second weekend of November, lucky with sunshine and temp was 20 degrees, so comfortably warm and just into their winter season so fewer tourists. Avoid visiting churches on Sundays as services in progress means restrictions. Mondays some museums closed. Get a tour guide for some things, essential for the vatican, otherwise it is a visual overload with no time to consult the info, so much better to listen as you look. Vatican is always crowded so easier to follow your guide and also prepaying means you avoid the huge queues to buy tickets. Angel Tours highly recommended. When going to the Colosseum, choose the Palatine Hill ticket entrance to avoid long queues at Colosseum entrance.
