Hi, I’m Tey, founder and director of the Museo de Ropa Étnica de México (MUREM). Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I am fortunate to hold dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico. After retiring from the Carnegie Museum of Art in 2008, I came to Valladolid to connect with my Mexican heritage in a fuller way. What was meant to be a one year stay became a lifelong commitment.
In 2018, I founded MUREM to celebrate and safeguard Mexico’s rich clothing traditions. Our collection showcases the artistry and diversity of indigenous, mestizo, and contemporary communities, offering visitors an authentic and meaningful way to experience Mexican culture through its textiles. With the support of our wonderful team, we’ve created a museum that is both intimate and welcoming.
As a nonprofit, MUREM relies on community support. Proceeds from the Casita del Museo directly sustain museum operations. By staying with us, you are helping preserve and share Mexico’s living heritage.
We are grateful for your support, and delighted to welcome you.
Valladolid is a historic colonial city located in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula. Founded in 1543, it is an attractive, safe, and very walkable city with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that reflects both Spanish colonial and deeply rooted Mayan traditions.
The city is an ideal base for exploring the region. Within a ten block radius of MUREM´s Casita, visitors can enjoy the town´s cenote, the municipal market, colonial-era churches and parks, museums, galleries, artisan stalls, and a variety of restaurants, ice cream shops, and cafes.
Just beyond Valladolid, many fascinating destinations are within easy reach: the archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam, cenotes, nature reserves, and Mayan villages can be visited by traveling in colectivos, by bus, or by the Tren Maya. Valladolid’s central location also makes it convenient for day trips to Mérida, Cancún, and the Caribbean coast.
