The guesthouse is absolutely beautiful. It’s in a more remote location, so it’s very peaceful. The couple running たね are so very kind, and their cooking is exceptional. Breakfast was so delicious. We wish we spoke better Japanese so we could have talked more. They were such interesting people.

Our only wish is that we had stayed even longer.

The location and owners make this homestay special. The latter is at the foot of a historic and important Buddhist shrine and resting place of Kato Kiyomasa, builder of the Kumamoto Castle, while the former are generations-old family of soba makers. While breakfast didn't come with soba, it was one of the best I've eaten in Japan. The space is comfortable, traditional and has everything you may need, including excellent views of the city.
Kumamoto

The accommodation offers a shared kitchen, full-day security and luggage storage for guests. This hostel is for women only and is super well located, a few cafes and kissaten around and only a 10-15mn walk to the main touristic places (Kumamoto castle etc.). It was super clean, 2 shower rooms and 2 toilets, the futons were thick and super comfortable, and the lady running it was so nice. She also speaks English. Towels can be bought there for ¥200-500 depending on the size as well as toothbrushes. Also provides shampoo and body wash. The room was well heated and we had a great sleep. 100% recommend. We didn’t use it but there’s also a kitchen and a coffee corner.

A beautiful traditional style Japanese house, surrounded by the owners’ orchard and work shed. ;) Shono and Sae are incredibly sweet abd welcoming, eager to help and share. They offer plentiful snacks and vegetables and a fully equipped kitchen for use. We enjoyed using the shared kitchen and being able to hang our laundry to dry outside. The room was perfect and cool at night with pure mountain air! The shrine in Miyaji is also beautiful!

The hostel was super comfortable, clean and had everything I needed. Kikuchi is such a nice place with many beautiful spots around the area. I rented a bike from Rio and drove around on my first day, and I was positively overwhelmed by the beauty of the nature! I can recommend to go here!:)

We chose Kikuchi instead of Kumamoto, to get away from the city before our trip to Mt Aso. We got a lovely country house, but the main benefit was the lovely couple who hosted us. Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

Very spacious house with well equipped kitchen in a quiet setting. Perfect place to stay for a couple of nights if you want to explore the Aso region. The host was very welcoming, friendly, and helpful.
Great location, quiet yet convenient
Clean and comfortable room with a unique twist! Haru was a great host as well.
An quiet spacious country house on the forest edge with lovely views of Mt Aso. Driving & check in instructions were clear and easy (indeed Google Maps cannot be followed). Appreciated the bag of rice from the hosts as well as various information such as the nearby hike. There are only two Western single beds, more travelers will have to enjoy the futon instead.
Great host who gave us lots of advice about what we can do around the place
Fantastic stay , great hosts and waiters! Catered to western taste too.
Basic, no-frills hostel, clean & quiet | close to Kumamoto station and Kumamoto Castle | basic kitchen, coffee/tea provided | warm shower, towel provided | bunks have privacy curtain | small lockers for valuable items | good WiFi | payment is yen only upon check-in |
Excellent and friendly host with fantastic recommendations for local food and activities. Quiet and tranquil location.
Lovely stay in Kumamoto! Near a tram stop, easily walkable into the city center and to the train station. Room was small but fit all my luggage without issue. Hostel generally was clean and quiet, and the common room was great to sit in for a while in the evenings. The wifi connection was strong throughout the building.
The hosts were exceptionally kind. I mentioned I planned on hiking near Mt Aso and they prepared a lunch for me two days in a row. They upgraded my room as I was the only person staying there, drove me to the store and the station when I didn't have a car, and did everything to make me feel welcome. The location was incredible and quiet, with stunning views of Kumamoto and a beautiful guesthouse. I can't thank them enough for their kindness!
