Román is an excellent host - gracious and kind, knows the town and the area well, and makes sure that everything is OK for you throughout the visit. You never know what you’re going to get when booking hotels in South America’s smaller towns, but my experience at el Roy was really great.”

The 100 year old hacienda is nicely refurbished with such a love for detail and the modern clean facilities just make you feel relaxed. I stayed a night longer than planned and felt like being on a retreat. I liked the 15min walk to Cotacachi and getting a taxi from the hostal to the Cuicocha lagoon and other places was no problem too. Watching the ever changing clouds around the volcano and colibri's doing their business around hibiscus flowers was better than any TV programme 😊”

  “Our stay here was the very best part of our trip to Ecuador. The location was perfect, a small very rural working organic farm. We loved their protection of the cloud forest while working with neighboring farmers to practice sustainable farming. Nice to get away from the city. The property is a wonderful mix of garden, natural cloud forest, and pastures. A beautiful stream runs through it with places to bath if you wanted. The food was wonderful, plentiful, fresh, and much of it new for us. Freshly made cheese, fresh roasted and ground coffee (and chocolate!), freshly baked bread, marmalades from their own fruit, freshly blended fruit juices... Eduardo and Patricia were thoughtful and kind. They guided us through the the forest several times included with the price. We were able to see several bird species we had never seen before, including a Masked Trogon, Speckled Hummingbird, Red-Billed Parrot, and Plate-billed Mountain Toucan. I would have seen even more if I had gotten out of bed early! Loved the cool nights and comfortable days. Lighting Bugs brighten the night time. Patricia taught us to make baskets from scratch. This involved collecting two kinds of vines and splitting the vines to the proper size. While a bit out of the way, Eduardo provided clear directions on how to get there and gave several options for transportation and costs. Meals are shared with other visitors which makes the visit even more enjoyable.”

The owners, Maria Belén and Guido are very friendly, absolutely lovely and very communicative. They provide you with anything you might need. The breakfast and the meals in the restaurant are excellent! The cabins are located in a beautiful garden with lots of birds and flowers. Very close by are the "termas de nangulvi" (hot water springs), which are especially nice and relaxing in the evening after having an active day in the mountains. Maria Belén is very helpful with outdoor activities, she knows a lot about the area and can organise day trips for you (for example to the pyramids of Gualiman or bird watching tours). The surrounding area is very beautiful, and the people I met were all very friendly. I'd recommend this place to anyone who travels Ecuador and likes to have some outdoor activities, as it is a very typical region and not at all crowded.”
