Curaçao is all palm-fringed beaches, rocky coves and underwater adventure. In the capital of Willemstad, a cosmopolitan vibe sits alongside an immense national pride. You can shop and dine at fusion restaurants in the Punda quarter, or discover the capital’s traditional side in Otrobanda. Connecting these quarters are two bridges, one a floating pedestrianised walkway called Queen Emma Bridge, the other a staggering, 26-metre-high overpass called Queen Juliana Bridge. The latter is the highest bridge in the Caribbean. Wherever you go, you’ll see constant reminders of the different ethnic backgrounds that have combined over the years to create one of the most interesting cultures in the Caribbean. Keep your ears peeled for Papiamentu, a mixture of Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch that is now the island's native Creole. West of Willemstad, you’ll find quiet beaches like Blue Bay and Playa cas Abao, where you can enjoy an idyllic climate that rarely drops below 25 degrees Celsius at any time of year. Further west lies Christoffelpark, the only national park on the island, and more remote places like Lagun and Sabana Westpunt. These smaller towns are the best spots to go scuba diving, with clear coral reefs and the wreckage of an old tugboat to explore. There’s a good variety of accommodation available on Curaçao, from luxury villas and glitzy hotel resorts, to privately rented apartments and cozy B&Bs.
