This is a true Costa Rica rainforest, jungle experience. All staff from kitchen to the guides are superb. The isolation is exciting. Great opportunity to understand the jungle a bit better and see wildlife.

Such beautiful accommodation and location. The lodge has a huge veranda overlooking a river. From the verandah we saw fire flies, iguanas, howler monkeys and humming birds. Absolutely incredible. We are in Costa Rica for a month and so far this is our favourite place that we have stayed.

We stayed at Horquetas River Lodge for one night on our way to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It is a secluded gem offering a retreat next to a beautiful river. From the moment I arrived the staff were polite and very helpful. My room was spacious and clean and in a beautiful setting among the trees by the river. The hotel manager was kind enough to send me an electronic copy of a bird field guide so that I could identify the numerous types found around the grounds. The hotel grounds are truly beautiful and well maintained with wildlife abounding in the various trails and paths. Designed so that visitors can walk around in the heaviest of rainfall without getting wet. There is a veranda at the restaurant where you can eat breakfast and watch the birds coming to feed on fruit put out by the staff. Easily reached in two hours using the public buses from San Jose. Breakfast was well prepared and very tasty, both continental and local dishes available.

This lodge is set in the Tirimbina Nature Reserve and 2 km from De la Virgen Park. It features free Wi-Fi, an extensive garden and a furnished terrace.

If you want a real jungle experience, this is the place. Combine that with comfortable rooms, a hot shower, stunning nature, very friendly staff and great food. That is Chilamate Eco Retreat. We went for a rafting tour (booked in the hotel), it was AWESOME! Our guide was a pro-kayaker and knew this river like his back pocket. Friendly, funny and explains a lot about the nature there. The hotel provided water shoes as we did not have them. Also book the Night Walk in the hotel. Because the garden and jungle around the hotel is full of animals! You won't spot it yourself, but with a guide you will see amazing nature. What we saw in the jungle garden: armadillo, snakes, banana spider, red eyed frog, poison dart frog, opossum, basilisk, bullfrog, bullet ant, lizards, and more! So, we only got 1 advice for travellers: Go here. There is lots to see. Also good food at Sodas around the hotel.

LOVED this place. hosts are super attentive. place was exactly as described. lovely view down over the valley and the river which is AMAZING to cool off in and provided hours of entertainment for the kids. fantastic front porch area, fully functional kitchen. and TAKE THE TOUR as it's a really fascinating insight into vanilla production from the (or one of the) first producers in Costa Rica (i had kids duty and missed out on some of the details)
