The beaches are stunning and very accessible compared to other beach towns. There are many beautiful unique beaches: South Beach, Battery Point, Harbor Beach, Pebble Beach, and Point St. George. The town is really bad. Broken down, deserted buildings, drugged out people every other block. We go often for the beaches and would love to see the town blossom. Makes me sad.
The ocean views at Crescent City and surrounding area were beautiful! It was the perfect location for us to visit the Redwood National Forest. The drive/scenery from Sacramento to Crescent City was fabulous. Roads we took coming to and from were very winding and slow, but you can't beat the views!
I stayed in Crescent City as part of my visit to Redwood National Park. During the trip, I explored several spots including the Street Memorial, Crescent Beach Overlook, and the Big Tree. I visited these places while heading back toward the Bay Area.
I was born and raised in Crescent City, so I am prejudiced. I love the beaches and the surrounding area. The Smith River is wonderful -- it's a great place to just relax and enjoy the environment.
Lots to do for families! Visited the Ocean World place, it was fun to watch sea lions and seals. Spent several days on the long Crescent Beach, it was beautiful--we all got a bit sunburned. Lots of playing in the sand and kids loved it. Obligatory sand castles built. Grandkids went to tidepools north of the lighthouse one day and had fun seeing starfish, etc. Went to park that had a huge playground. Collected a few agates. We stopped by the Del Norte Animal Shelter and were impressed with the cleanliness and friendliness of the staff. They have a lot of wonderful adoptable dogs. It's too bad that the area seems so depressed, Many homeless people it seems. We had bike stolen off our locked bike rack. We should have stored it inside motel. It's a beautiful area, just be careful with your possessions, lock your cars. There's more than enough to do over there. Next time we should probably bike more trails, they do have a good bike path in town. Maybe go to Trees of Mystery south of town on another visit. We went through the redwoods while we were there, entering from the Elk Valley Rd side in Crescent City.
There are pros and cons to every city, but my favorite part about Crescent City is the overall beach town atmosphere. Traveling to escape the heat of the Rogue Valley, the coastal weather is a nice reprieve. I love the ability to walk to the closest beach from the hotel room. Stores, restaurants and businesses are in close proximity. The layout of the town is easy to navigate. Yurok Tribe of the Yurok Reservation is not too far south on 101. This is my main reason for visiting this area. Absolutely stunning area and beautiful. Amazing experience visiting, learning and exploration. And enjoying the Salmon Festival. This is a must for travelers to visit at any time of year.
