Klagenfurt is one of the nicest cities in Europe. Very safe. Very clean. It is a university City. This brings a balance of culture and liveliness. Some lovely architecture and history. Just step out of the City and the countryside is breathtaking.
My recent visit to Klagenfurt was an unforgettable experience. This city, the capital of the Carinthia region, perfectly combines natural beauty with rich Austrian history and culture. One of the first places I visited was the Lindwurm, Klagenfurt’s iconic dragon statue located in Neuer Platz. This statue is not only a symbol of the city but also a striking landmark that captures the essence of local history. The Wörthersee was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my trip. This crystal-clear lake is perfect for relaxing, swimming, or engaging in water sports, especially during the summer. The views from the lake’s shores are simply spectacular, offering a perfect setting to unwind. Strolling through the old town of Klagenfurt felt like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets, Renaissance buildings, and charming squares create a unique atmosphere. Don’t miss the Landhaus with its impressive Hall of Coats of Arms, as well as the numerous historic churches that add both spiritual and architectural depth to the city. For those traveling with family, Minimundus is a must-see. This miniature park allows you to travel the world in an afternoon, enjoying precise replicas of famous monuments and buildings. It’s a fun and educational activity for both kids and adults. In summary, Klagenfurt is a hidden gem in southern Austria. With its blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and vibrant urban life, it’s a destination that has something for everyone. I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful city.
There is a very nice market near the center square, where you can buy local produce. The rest of the city center is quite boring. In the summer heat, most restaurants offer traditional local fatty food (schnitzel, pork knee, Spaetzle etc.) and the service is not that great (especially regarding time). You have to search for something interesting. And the place is expensive, I guess mainly during the season. The Worthersee on the other hand is great. The water is very warm and the views and the cleanliness are amazing. Found some nice public bathing spots and few decent restaurants around the See. But you have to look hard for those.
Heiligengeist Platz is central bus location for short tours to Wörther See, Minimundus, Europa Park, Stadium etc. In the city center I enjoyed the meals of Mimi (Asian), Landhaus Gasthof (Alter Platz) and a very nice, friendly small Italian restaurant Bar Risto Pizza Toscana in the Paradeisergasse. Worth visiting: Lendkanal (a longer walk down to Wörther See through Europa Park), Neuer Platz, Alter Platz, with kids the Harry Potter Cafe on Alter Platz, the Saturday market (until 12 a.m.) on Benediktiner Platz, Wörther See beach (Strandbad), Maria Loretto / Restaurant with excellent service / dishes. In the surroundings (with car): Pyramidenkogel with a great slide for kids and Velden (an elegant beachtown).
Klagenfurt is a very beautiful city and there are.many places to visit. During the night it's silent so you can rest easily. However for us it was a bit too silent at night. There weren't many people on the streets so if you are looking for a place where you can enjoy nightlife Klagenfurt is not for you.
I found everyone including taxi drivers , people in restaurants helpful and kind as I was travelling by myself. I went with the purpose of visiting the prisoner of war camp my father was in WW2 and visited the war memorial. The museum was well worth visiting and most helpful.
